Frequently asked questions

Is Grammarly secure?

Ensuring the safety and security of our users' information is important to us at Grammarly. We maintain protections and practice privacy by design.

Is Grammarly a privacy risk?

We maintain stringent protections for our users and practice privacy by design. We encourage you to read our Privacy Policy for more detailed information.

Does Grammarly sell my content?

No, we do not and will not sell the content you upload to our products. We make money from user subscriptions. We do not help third parties advertise their own products to our users.

Is Grammarly a keylogger?

No. A keylogger records every keystroke and sends data to a third party for the benefit of that party and does so without the user’s knowledge. Grammarly’s product doesn’t fit any of these descriptions.

What data does Grammarly collect?

Grammarly collects personal information such as username, email address, contact and language preferences.

Our Privacy Policy provides a complete description of the categories of personal information we collect (please see the second section titled “what types of personal data does Grammarly collect?”). You can also find information about the purposes of processing your personal data, as well as to whom we disclose your personal information, among other information.

As a user you can request a personal data report at any time to see what personal information Grammarly processes about you by navigating to your privacy settings and clicking “Submit Request” under “Personal Data Report”.

Can Grammarly employees see or use my writing?

No. Grammarly takes your privacy seriously and restricts access to customer data across our network, infrastructure, and services. Only those authorized to access data critical to their work may do so. You own what you write.

Access is granted via specific, audited permissions, and access to data requires review and approval by the responsible managers. For example, if you encounter a problem with your account that can only be fixed by reviewing your text, a select group working directly on that task may access your document with your permission. Also, if you send a document to our expert writing service, our writing experts will read the content you submit to make edits that are offered by this service.

How does Grammarly use my data?

Across all our product offerings, Grammarly’s enterprise-grade certifications and user-first approach to security and privacy reflect our practices and policies to ensure users’ data is safe and secure.

Grammarly’s algorithms analyze your text, writing behavior, usage data, and other information to provide writing suggestions, insights, and usage tips.

You can opt out of allowing Grammarly to use your content to train its models and improve its product for everyone. To do so, turn off Product Improvement and Training in your account settings.

When tailored assistance features are on, Grammarly will process and store data and associate it with your account to improve our product’s suggestions for you. You can opt out of tailored assistance at any time by visiting the Feature customization page: https://account.grammarly.com/customize/features. Upon opting out of a feature, all data stored for that feature to personalize your Grammarly experience will be deleted.

Please note that if you save a document in the Grammarly Editor, we’ll store it until you delete the document or your Grammarly account. You can access all of your saved documents when you’re logged in to your Grammarly account at https://app.grammarly.com
