Does the following sentence make sense?: he barks big.

No, it does not. The word "big" means large but in your sentence, I think that you want to say that he has a "loud" bark. If you are trying to say that the dog's bark is 'bigger' than most, a better sentence would be:

 

He has a loud bark.

(or 'He has a very loud bark.')
