Was or were?


Here is my sentence: The best part about bringing friends over were the 10 pieces of pie... 


Do I use were or was?

The subject is 'The best part' (singular). The verb must be 'was'.

You might think that "friends" is the subject, but it is really "the best part" because there is a bringing in front of the "friends". Think about it this way, "The best part... were the 10 pieces of pie"

That doesn't make sense.
