Is this correct?: There was a knock at the door and a shuffle of feet.
Lewis is correct. Another possible replacement would be: There was a knock at the door, and a shuffling of feet. In this case, we've made a compound sentence (Don't miss the comma!) by joining them with a ", and" and creating a new independent clause with the gerund "shuffling".
