Subject-verb agreement


Is this correct?: There was a knock at the door and a shuffle of feet.

Lewis is correct.  Another possible replacement would be: There was a knock at the door, and a shuffling of feet.  In this case, we've made a compound sentence (Don't miss the comma!) by joining them with a ", and" and creating a new independent clause with the gerund "shuffling".

Simply adding the comma doesn't make this a compound sentence. There is no verb in the second clause, so it is still a dependent clause.
