What type of word 'teacher' in the following sentence:

"My mother is teacher." (However, it should be My mother is a teacher.)

I believe it to be  sublect complement, but one of my collegues says it to be an adjective in predicative case and in support she points out the following sentence:

"My mother is beautiful."

What do you opine?

Please help.
