Is a definate/indefinate article necessary here?

I don't know what the proper grammar usage would be on the following sentence example:

The house is set to become event and conference space.

The house is set to become AN event and conference space.

Is "an" grammatically correct or should there not be an article preceding "event and conference space"? Which, if either, is accurate?
