Are the commas in this sentence correct?

He lost his teeth, a loss that caused him to wear dentures that were uncomfortable, and at times, painful.

Our thought is that there is an interruption with a parethetical (nonessential clause), followed by a adjectival clause, and then an emphasis on the word "pain".

Can the sentence be written like this given the cited rationale?
