Plurals and singulars are all mixed up with confusion

Why can't we say The couple were there same as the duo were there?

This is simply a matter of singular versus plural.

Do you think that "couple" is the same as "couples"?

No.  You know that "couple" is singular and "couples" is plural.

Both of these words are being used to recognize a couple as a "group".

The couple was on vacation last week.  (one set, singular)

The couples were on vacation last week. (more than one set, plural)

Duo has the exact same function when being used to address a pair.

"duos" would be the plural.
