How to use articles 'the' and 'a' in a technical writing


The rock is an yeallow clay with quartzous nodules. A cement is sand-based. In the rock roof the interlayers are reddish to red, silty, fine-grained and with a bluish pieces of quartz. The articles 'the' and 'a' implimentaion is correct? How to use such articles correctly without thinking. It there a special rule?
