Punctuation after a quote.

After a quote in a story, you generally  write he said, or she said. If I write, "You guys are out of control," she said, as she continued to watch her favorite soap. My question is. Can I use (said, as)? As is a subordinate conjuction and as far as I know is not supposed to be used after  a comma. However your program allows it and I like to use it. Is it correct or not. Thanks.
