Adjective vs. Adverb

Why is  "late" as in "He sleeps very late" an Adjective rather than an Adverb?  We say "He sleeps peacefully" rather than "He sleeps peaceful."  Why?

It is an adverb because it is modifying the verb.

"late" is describing how long he 'slept' (the verb).

If you wanted to use it as an adjective, then use it as a predicate adjective following a linking verb:

After oversleeping, he was late.

Now it is a predicate adjective describing the subject (a pronoun) and not a verb.
