Chickens lay eggs... But what if they are lying?

Chickens lay eggs. That’s for sure.  But if I am reclining, is it lying or laying?  Lying seems wrong, because it means not telling the truth…  Here is the sentence I am trying to write:  As the client lay in the hospital bed, her boyfriend was by her side trying to find out what was wrong with her using WebMD.  Does it matter if you are talking about sitting or being stretched out on something versus like just being on it.  Like, I always keep my cup laying on the counter next to the water dispenser so I have it when I need it… Thanks in advance for helping me!!!
