Talking about Education and the use of 'if'

what is wrong with this sentence?

. This becomes clear when Albert Einstein pointed out that ‘ Education is that which remains when one has forgotten what one has learned in school’, making it look as if Education and schooling are at variance

It's a mouthful (and the punctuation is a bit screwy), but without rearranging the sentence I might prefer to say, "…making it look as though…" or more concisely, "…as though…". Also, to my ear it should be, "…Education and schooling were at variance."
