Is preposition needed or not in below sentences?

Please see which sentences below are correct?

 

1a.  "Some of us like riding in a taxi because we can reach our destination more quickly."

1b.  "Some of us like riding a taxi because we can reach our destination more quickly."

 

2a.  "Some of us like riding on the ferry as we like the sea's fresh smell."

2b.  "Some of us like riding the ferry as we like the sea's fresh smell."

 

3a.  "None of us like riding on the tram because it is slow."

3b.  "None of us like riding the tram because it is slow."

I agree with Lewis.  It actually seems more natural, to me, to say 2 and 3 without the prepositions.  I'm not aware of a rule that applies here, either.  Baffling.

I can see 'in a taxi' because you don't ride on it, as you would a ferry. But you don't ride on a tram, but 'riding the tram' seems fine. Chalk it up to idioms. Lewis NeidhardtFeb 10 '12 at 14:59
