run on? Suggestions?

is the comma correct between studies, and? Suggestions?

See example:

I have taken these virtues with me on my journey through academia and they have been the most powerful influences on both my search for direction in my studies, and purpose in my life.

I wouldn't have put it there; the 'and' joins two items - direction in my studies and purpose in my life. However, I'd put a comma before the first 'and' because, here, it joins two independent clauses.
