Which is correct, towards or toward?

I have heard there is no real difference, although the using of the word "toward" is more formal. Same goes for words with similar "ard" endings such as backwards, forwards, etc.

I was under the impression that "towards," "backwards" etc. are not correct--is there a final word or is this something that's been added to the dictionary since I turned my back? Jackie SmithFeb 03 '12 at 22:54
