To use an apostrophe or not to use.

I'm just wondering which of these is the correct way of writing this sentence. Not sure if the apostrophe in (friends)  is required or not.

The hatchling grinned at his friend's words.

or The hatchling grinned at his friends words.

An apostrophe is needed since the friends possess their words. Remember that apostrophes are most often used to make something possessive.
