What are differences between AmE and BrE in writing dates?

In general, in BrE the day comes first, followed by the month -- 10 May 2011.  In AmE, the dates often write the month first then the day -- May 10, 2011.  Adding the 'th' in either case is optional and generally unecessary because the reader automatically reads the 'th' even if it is not present.
