Why did the author use 'thing' here? Would the meaning be kept if we remove this word?

"The fame thing is interesting because I never wanted to be famous."

The word 'thing' here is used as a informal synonym to 'idea' or 'phenomenon'.  The meaning would change if this word were removed as having this word in the sentence alludes to an abstract concept of fame.
