Why do we say in English 'FOR sale' and 'TO rent'?

We normally always say 'For Sale'.  Also, to me, 'For Rent' also sounds more correct.  We tend to use 'to rent' and 'to sell' only as infinitive forms of the verbs.

For example:

"That house up the street is for rent.  I think I want to rent it."

"I'm going to rent out a room to save money."

"The apartment is for sale.  Are you interested in visiting the open house?"
