Single Quotation Marks
Single quotation marks are the ones with one apostrophe in each set: ‘___’. These are commonly used in British English, but they’re interchangeable with double quotation marks.
‘Dinner’s ready!’ she called.
The review said the play was ‘funny’ and ‘inspiring’.
If you use single quotation marks as a standard, make sure you use double quotes when you’re writing a quote inside a quote. Don’t use a set of single quotation marks inside another set.
Andrew said, ‘The review said the play was ‘funny’ and ‘inspiring’.’
Andrew said, ‘The review said the play was “funny” and “inspiring”.’
