Double Quotation Marks
Double quotation marks are the ones with two apostrophes in each set: “___”. These are probably the most commonly used quotation marks, but they’re exactly the same as single quotation marks. Americans usually use double quotation marks.
“Dinner’s ready!” she called.
The review said the play was “funny” and “inspiring”.
If you use double quotation marks as a standard, make sure you use single quotes when you’re writing a quote inside a quote. Don’t use a set of double quotation marks inside another set.
Andrew said, “The review said the play was “funny” and “inspiring”.”
Andrew said, “The review said the play was ‘funny’ and ‘inspiring’.”
