Essay Writing
Essays play a major role in getting a college degree. Your ability to write a good essay, one that displays what you know and your ability to make a point will help you succeed in college as well as in your career. Give plenty of time to learning this skill, and you’ll have a jump-start on success in college and afterward.
You should learn in freshman composition how to do this. Remember that there is a very long tradition for this form of communication, beginning in the 4th century B.C.E. This was before the art and science of writing had been created, so the early “essays” were spoken. However, what worked then works today whether in speaking or in writing. Much can be accomplished with a well-designed speech. President John F. Kennedy is well-known for his speeches, actually spoken essays. A careful observation of those speeches reveals that he was well-versed in the skills handed down by the Greek Rhetoricians.
The good thing about all of this is that you don’t need an ivy-league education in order to know and understand these skills. You do need to take them seriously, however, because they may be what drives your success in the world. Even in everyday speaking and writing, the rhetorical skills help us solve problems and achieve our ends and goals.
