comma vs semicolon and quotation marks
In the sentence below shoulda comma or a semicolon be used after the word late? Also, are quotation marks appropriate when referring to a note as in this sentence?
Sentence:
Sally's note to Jay read, "I'll be working late, don't wait up for me."

After the word 'late', I suggest using a period and capitalising 'don't'. And, your use of quotation marks is perfectly fine in this context.
