Conditional Sentence
why would this sentence be incorrect - should was be were?
See example:
I don't know if it was a result of my terror, or if the air had become saltier in the late summer, but a briny film suddenly coated the back of my throat.

This isn't exactly a conditional sentence, but Grammarly is probably confused because the programming is catching 'if' and trying to figure out the conditional, but you don't have one.
Your sentence is correct and there is nothing wrong.
