In that case, how far can one rely on his drawings as reflective of his emotional and mental state?

1) Comma after introductory or transition clauses.

2) & 3) When you refer to one person you cannot use the plural possessive their, which refers to something that belongs to more than one person.  You can use the phrases 'his or her' or simply his or her as you wish.  You could also use one's, but that risks sounding overly formal and perhaps old-fashioned.
