The answer depends upon the type of writing. For formal or academic writing, using personal pronouns such as "you" is discouraged. Formal and academic writing is considered to be school reports, term papers, dissertations, journal articles, and non-fiction books. It is perfectly acceptable to use personal pronouns in fiction, personal essays, letters, and other more casual situations.
