Since we had met last time
"It has been a long time since we met last time." I know that this sentence is perfectly fine and I was wondering if "It had been a long time since we had met last time." is grammatically fine? And I think that the 'had met' is a more past tense than "met". What do you think?
Thank you as usual and I am sorry for taking your time too often.
Two examples Lewis offered show the point I'd like to make. While there is nothing wrong with "since we met last time," it is somewhat wordy and introduces the issue over tense. A better usage, at least stylistically, is "since last we met." This can be used with any main clause tense.
I hope this helps.
