plural noun in comparative clause

Is the phrase "more lives than one" correct? I think it must be, since "more life than one" is obviously incorrect. "More than one life" seems better, but it doesn't work well in the context. Is the first phrase wrong, technically speaking? It sounds a bit off to me.
