sentence grammar
Can you start a sentence with And or But?
1 answer
Tolley makes an excellent point about controlling the use of "And" and "But" to start sentences. The best use for these as sentence starters is to give a sentence special emphasis. If we overuse it, then the "specialness" is lost.
Out of curiosity, I looked at my own writing. I use "and" as a sentence starter about once in every 300 sentences, or every 6000 words. "But" is used slightly more often, but that is another story.
