Commas and the word "so"
Example: Nothing in me is normal, so nothing in my diary should be normal. Is the comma in this sentence in its correct place?

Yes. In your sentence "so" is a conjunction being used to join two independent clauses (complete sentences). When a conjunction (and, but, so ...) joins two independent clauses, a comma is required.
