"Was" is a singular verb and "Were" is a plural verb.


"Was" is followed by a singular noun.

There was a meeting at my office.

There was a spider in the bath.


"Were" is always followed by a plural noun.

There were many people at the bus stop .

There were  two elephants in the zoo.
