A notice to users of a chapel

Please do not allow the door to slam shut.   Please hold onto the door handle, then slowly and gently release it, after you.

Question:  are the words "after you" necessary?   "After you" is to meant to suggest the notion that one can only release the door after you have either stepped in or out of the room.
