We use the sentence: I am looking forward to hearing/seeing....

Why do we use gerunds with the phrase forward to? Please explain.

Other fixed expressions.

Look forward to doing: "We look forward to hearing from you soon.""It took him a long time to get used to living in a city.""I prefer cooking to doing the dishes."

Are there any other fixed expressions in like this in which we use gerunds?
