A field-use, emission-scanning electron microscope was used to study the surface morphology of the samples.
It is my understanding that 'emission-scanning electron microscope' is the name of this particular tool. If that is true, there is not much that can be done to make it clearer aside from hyphenating parts to makes the adjectives more clear.
