the word patient-

I am unsure how to correctly us in sentence. what helped in recovery helped the patients' or patient's hip abductor muscles

See example:

Another study was that the use of a non-traditional assistive device (Thera-Togs) early in recovery helped the patients hip abductor muscles therefore, improving the patient's ability to ambulate.

If you are referring to one patient, it is patient's.

If it is multiple patients, then use patients'.

It could go either way in this context, because a study will have multiple patients.  However, one could be looking at the results in regard to each individual patient.  Pick one way or the other and be consistent.
