alternate and alternative
What is the difference between alternate and alternative?
1 answer
As a side note, "alternative" (adjective or noun) can also refer to a genre of rock music:
MuteMath is an alternative band from New Orleans.
"Alternative" (as an adjective) can also mean "unconventional":
She has chosen to study alternative medicine.
Those who live on Cortes Island lead an alternative lifestyle.
Neither of these definitions work with "alternate".
Note that the pronunciation for "alternate" is different when using it as a verb.

As a side, side note: "alternative medicine" is falling from favor. "Integrative medicine" is becoming the preferred term for medical practice that merges traditional practices with modern medicine.
Many thanks.
