Should I have said, "help us through the difficult times?"


Christians are not exempt from life’s disappointments, but we have Jesus, who will help us through difficult times.

I think you can go either way, Susan.  Adding the article indicates certain definite difficult times.  Without the article, it means any times that are difficult.  It doesn't change the meaning in this case.
