Is it OK to use "but?"


The woman was surprised at Jesus’ request, for Jews did not associate with Samaritans or speak to women in public.  But Jesus loved people and wasn’t concerned about rules and traditions.

I'm going to go with Oxford Dictionaries on this one. You may start the sentence with "but."
