Past Perfect Simple VS VS Past Simple: suffer

What is the difference between the following sentences? Even if the difference is a small one, I would still like to what a native speaker thinks.

a) She suffered from asthma when she was very young.

b) She had suffered from asthma when she was very young.

Thank you.

We usually use the past perfect tense to show that one thing happened before another thing. That is not the case here - both things happened at the same time - so it is unnecessary.
