May I know if I want to write 'My father drove to the town', should I write 'drove his car to the town'? Thanks.

I agree with Lewis.
If you need to mention the vehicle, use the second one.
The first one is more acceptable in general sense or when the vehicle is known or you don't want to mention.

Ths word 'drove' already implies that he 'drove a car', unless he's a cowboy driving cattle, or some other specific instance, (drove his truck) it would be correct either way. The rest of the paragraph should have already determined what he drove (maybe).
