Yes, "when" is the right word. The sentence is fine.

I agree that demands is stronger than requires, but only you know which one fits your meaning best. There are times when I feel like the world is very demanding, and other times when I think, well, these are things I am required to do. If neither word feels quite right to you, head to the thesaurus.
