In the following sentences should there be a comma after 'I said' and before 'I asked' ?

"You did a good job," I said, before leaving.

Trying not to act like I was being nosey, I asked, "Did he ever do that before?"

Thanks

You do not need a comma after "I said" in the first sentence. "Before leaving" is not part of the dialogue. It is modifying the verb.

I said, "You did a good job  before leaving."

Trying not to act like I was being nosey, I asked, "Did he ever do that before?"
