Will you help me improve this paragraph?

I would like to share one of my experiences faced in my life.  When I was in class X, I went to NCC Camp with my friends.  Intension of the camp was to select candidates for the Republic Parade in Delhi.  Candidates came from all over the places.  The selection process was based on the total points scored during the training.  I was leading my team and had a bit more confidence than others.  I thought that I would get through all the exams.  The cadets carried out  various tests to select a candidate. The first exam was about march fast and commands.  I secured good marks, however;  one of my friends failed to get through the exam.  I thought to myself that she would not be selected.  All the exams panned out nicely.  I thought I would be selected.  But, When they announced the results, I was shocked to hear of the bad news.  And, another shock was my friend  got selected, who did poorely in the exams,  for the Republic day. 

I failed to figure out the reason for her success.  Finally,  I came to know  Why I wasn't selected. They selected the candidates based on the gradewise.  My grades were inconsistent through out the exams.  It dawned on me that confidence is the key to success.  We must work hard; Hard work pays rich divendends in the our life.
