"to a map that emerged like a movie screen"  Is this a simile

Yes, that is a simile.  I would probably not use the word emerged, though.  That is when something comes forward or rises.  A movie screen usually comes down from above. How about descended

Patty is correct.  The clue to a phrase being a simile is the inclusion of the words 'as' or 'like' in comparing one thing to another.

He is as crazy as a loon.

He is sly like a fox.

 

A similar trope is a metaphor.  It differs from a simile in that it equates one thing to another.

He is a crazy loon.

He's just a sly fox.
