indirect speech


Is this correct,please?' "Give me a glass of water," said the old man.' converted as ' The old man asked for a glass of water.' or ' The old man ordered to be given a glass of water.'

It would depend on what you want to convey about the old man's request.  If you use 'ordered', you're implying the old man was rather gruff about it.  'Asked' implies that he was more polite.
