Is this sentence grammatically correct "The father being late, the family was worried"?

Yes it is correct.
It is absolute construction of simple sentence.

While it may be grammatically correct, it is uncomfortable. If the entire work was written in this type of prose then it could work well... but out of context, all on its own, it just kinda falls flat for me.
