You need to either make this two sentences or separate the independent clauses with a semicolon.

 

It's funny.  When my children ...

It's funny; when my children ...

 

You would explain, not explained.

Actually the sentence should go like this:

 

When my children were young, I would have explained...

 

That's because it is a statement about the past, when the children were young.
