Awkward sentence - "Is" vs. "Are"

Hi there, I recently read the sentence Five months are a very long time and thought that the are sounded awkward. Though months is plural, shouldn't it be Five months is a very long time since time is singular? Thank you!

I would use 'is'.  The sentence refers to a single time span of five months and not five separate months.
