I could be wrong, but it seems like you are trying to come up with a pretty way of saying,"I really wasn't listening because I don't like your opinions."
You haven't actually told us what the key component is. We know what it stems from, but what is it? Is it that you aren't inclined to listen? Is it that you are dismissive of their words? Is it that you are too busy thinking about how to argue back? It isn't really the fact that you have differing opinions that leads you to be (not being) an ineffective listener. The opposite is true for many people - they listen more carefully when someone has an opposing viewpoint.
